Indianapolis Bowling

Cassie & Carly

When my daughter Cassie turned 12 she wanted to have a bowling birthday party at Sport Bowl (which used to be one of the bowling centers in Indianapolis) She and her sister Carly had grown up in the bowling alley because her dad and I were the owners. It wasn't just a bowling party though, it was a slumber party.  We started the party in the evening and the kids bowled and camped out in the playroom.  We all slept in sleeping bags on the concrete floor.  They even bowled in their pajamas!

It was great fun for them to bring their friends bowling as they had the run of the place.  They would bowl, fix their own drinks in the snack bar, play arcades and basically show their friends a good time.  Our offices were upstairs and they would all hang out, do their homework and spend time till we got off work.  Their friends loved going there after school.

We used to go in on holidays when no one was in the bowling center and the kids would run around, slide on the approaches and bowl in the dark.  We even took our collie sometimes. She would try to walk down the lane and all she would do is slip and slide.  Pretty funny to watch!

Cassie started her work career at Sport Bowl by learning to file, stuff envelopes and do payroll.  She later was a lane attendant, counter person and even worked as cleaning crew over-night.  She and her friend Leslie were cleaning one night when the vacuum cleaner caught on fire in the snack bar and we had to call the fire department.

I can't remember what Carly started out doing but she eventually was a supervisor and bartender/waitress.  Carly loved bowling and may have have been running the bowling center had it not been sold.

Both girls bowled in our Saturday Morning Youth League and in the Teen Traveling League.
High School bowling didn't start until Cassie was out of school but Carly bowled for Perry Meridian High School.  She was on the team when they won the Indiana State Championship girls division.

Bowling has always been a part of our lives.  Carly still bowls for fun and Cassie organizes a bowling event for her fellow teachers at Lowell Elementary, and I work at Western Bowl.

Share your stories if you were a bowling alley kid or your kids grew up in a bowling center.
I'd love to hear them.

Until next time...

GO BOWLING!

SNOW IS HERE

Wednesday, December 28, 2011 by Terri Powell
Oh finally the snow arrives and it seems to change the tone of everything. I only wish it had snowed like this on Christmas. Have you ever noticed when you are outside how quiet it becomes. It brings a peacefulness. But I know only too well how busy the bowling alleys in Indianapolis are when the snow begins to fly. The kids are out of school and the planning for the New Years' Eve event are enough to make you go crazy.  You can ask anyone of the staff and they will tell you this is a great time of year but NUTS.

I called around to our bowling centers today,  to see how everyone was doing with their big parties coming up. Southern bowling center has only 3 lanes left and everyone else has several openings.

They will be blowing up balloons, getting party favors together, buying those crazy door prizes and preparing the food. It takes every employee to pull those parties off. Team building Indianapolis is at it's highest when it comes to NYE at the bowling centers. There is a sense of pride when you look at your evening and know that approximately 1000 people celebrated the New Year with you.

The Language of the Lanes

Friday, September 9, 2011 by Terri Powell
Now that I have been in my new office for close to a month I was cleaning out a few files left from who knows when and I found a list of interesting bowling terms.  I have been hanging out at Bowling Alleys in Indianapolis for more years than I care to count and thought I knew all the bowling lingo.  Well let me tell you, I do not!

If you go to any Indiana bowling centers on league night you are bound to hear the language of the lanes.  I'm sure that most Bowling Alleys in Indianapolis all sound the same on league night. We all talk the language of the lanes.

Looking over this list of bowling lingo (33 definitions in fact) there were only 11 I knew. I made the decision to call on a few folks that had been in the bowling leagues Indianapolis a little longer than me and see if they knew them.  I did not set anyone up to fail, I told them the list I was reading, were bowling terms.

Barb Short, Manager at Expo Bowling Center, http://royalpin.com/ExpoBowl/expo.htm thank goodness had not heard of many more than I.  For example: she had heard of the Christmas Tree (leaving the 3-7-10 combination for righthander or the 2-7-10 combination for a lefthander; these are also called "faith, hope and charity") but was not able to come up with it's definition.

Monica Meals, Program Director at Woodland Bowling Center Indianapolis  http://royalpin.com/WoodlandBowl/woodland.htm had no idea what I was talking about when I asked her about "poison ivy" (the troublesome 3-7-10 split) also known as the "Christmas Tree". Her response was "that stuff you get from the yard".  Let me tell you, she is one sharp cookie and if she didn't know this, we could be looking at some real old school terms, after all she is a spring chicken. She knew about the same number as I.

In my quest to find others who had heard of these words, I have only found one and he started throwing words from the list at me and he hadn't even looked at it.  My guess is these are old school. Let's make this interesting and see how many of you are familiar with some of these and maybe even have some to share. When you are bowling leagues in Indianapolis do you use bowling lingo and have you heard of any of these? I would love to heard what you think each of these mean.

1. Mother-In-Law  2. Blowout  3. Grasshopper  4. Throwing Rocks  5. Umbrella Ball

I will post the definitions for these 5 tomorrow

Learn to Bowl (better)

Thursday, October 14, 2010 by Stacey Davis

I’m what the industry calls an open bowler – someone who comes in on weekend nights after the leagues and bowls a few games once or twice a year. I call people like me recreational bowlers.

One of the things that keeps me from bowling is I’m not very good at it. As a teenager and in college my friends and I would go to the bowling alley and have a good time. But by the middle of the 3rd game I was just throwing the ball down the lane to get it over with. I'm not about to sign up for an Indianapolis bowling tournament (yet), but I have a competitive streak in me and pretty much only have fun if I’m at least within a competitive score.

As the marketing director of several Indianapolis bowling centers it’s my job to find more recreational bowlers like me and introduce them back into bowling in Indianapolis. Royal Pin has a great Learn to Bowl program. I decided to promote the bowling lesson with Coach Ray Muir by taking them myself. I will blog about it the whole way through, including photos and videos.

Each week, or as we can set it up, I will have a bowling lesson with Ray. He’ll show me how things are suppose to be done and give me custom one-on-one training. As part of his program Ray will video record my steps as I bowl and give tips on how to improve my game. At my level, he’ll also need to give me the basic rules of the game.

Between coaching lessons I’ll be bowling with my friend Chris Nelson. Chris use to bowl as a kid and teenager. I plan to catch up and pass him. We’ll end up having to give him some pointers by the time this is done.

Ray and Dave Snell coach at all levels. They’ll do group or personal training. Check out our site for more information.

Our coaching program is a great step to getting non bowlers to feel good about bowling. As Coach Snell says, its 90% mental, 10% talent.

We had our first event pre bowling lesson, Tuesday. Let me say, there is very much room for improvement!

Youth Bowling

Saturday, October 9, 2010 by Terri Powell
Teen Travelers Youth Bowling Leagues Indianapolis has their kick off this weekend.

Sunday is the first day of the Teen Travelers league.  Expo Bowling Center is the first host of the year and like us here at Woodland Bowling Center Indianapolis looking forward to a successful season.

This year Woodland Bowling Center has 2 boys teams and 1 girls team.  We are excited about our teams and are sure that the Woodland teams will do very well.

It is amazing how the kids have grown up, some of these kids have been bowling in our youth bowling leagues for years. There are a few of them that started in the bumper division and I'm pretty sure that several of them have had their kids bowling birthday parties at our centers.

These kids are gaining experience visiting bowling alleys in Indianapolis each Sunday and competing for scholarships. Most of them have taken bowling lesson and some are still receiving lessons.  They work very hard to improve their game. Some continuing in Indianapolis bowling tournament and league bowling through out their lifetime.

Good Luck to all the travelers and special high five for the teams from Woodland Bowling Center Indianapolis!

Bowling Alley vs Bowling Center

Friday, September 3, 2010 by Terri Powell
Woodland Bowling Center Indianapolis, back in the day was a place where our parents went out to the bowling "alley". It was smoke filled and the beer flowed. Now it is not smoke filled but you can still have that beer. There are no worries about score keeping, only worry is what activity to do first. The bowling "alleys" are now a more family oriented place.  Woodland Bowling Center Indianapolis has become a place to relax, enjoy music, play billiards and enjoy the bowling atmosphere. There are so many possibilities from playing arcade games, food, leagues or recreational bowling. It is hard to imagine Woodland Bowling Center Indianapolis ever being a bowling "alley". Recently while watching a Mom with her children, I realized how different things are. I would so enjoy being that kid again. No more would I have to hang out behind Mom and Dad's lane. I would be able to play for hours in the Big Top and go outside and play Pirate's Cove Miniature Golf.  I thought how lucky I am to work in an industry that promotes not only corporate outings but also family time. Thank you to all the families that schedule their kids bowling birthday parties and help change the bowling "alley" into a bowling center.
