Special Events in Indianapolis (Bowling)

Thursday, January 26, 2012 by Susie Brehob
A few years ago the bowling industry had a campaign that sent portable bowling lanes, pins and balls to troops overseas.  The bags the equipment came in were signed by all the bowlers who donated money to cover the cost of the portable bowling lanes.  My nephew just returned from Afghanistan after serving there for a year (his 2nd year long deployment).  He wasn't serving in the army during those days so he didn't benefit from that program.  Dennis has always been a bowler.  He started out in the Saturday morning youth league program, bowled in the Indianapolis Teen Traveler's League and continued to league bowl as an adult.  His parents are avid bowlers (bowling at Expo Bowl bowling center), his wife and two oldest kids have also bowled in leagues.

Dennis even found a bowling center in South Korea where he could bowl.  There wasn't that same luxury in Afghanistan for people in the service.  Since returning home to Kansas he has begun bowling again.  He and his family have gotten to enjoy the sport of bowling again.

The newest campaign  hosted by Royal Pin Leisure Centers is a bowling league called "Adopt A Platoon".  Bowlers will be paying their weekly fees with all prize money going to support a platoon.  We will send supplies, goodies, games, etc. to try to make their deployment just a little better.

Bowlers have always supported our troops.  The Bowlers to Victory Link is the bowling industry's largest charity.  Bowlers from all over the country contribute during the campaign every November and all money collected goes to local veteran's hospitals to provide recreational equipment, tvs., and furniture, etc. for visiting families.

Homes for families of patients in veteran's hospitals similar to the Ronald McDonald houses are being built through this foundation.

Thanks to all the generous bowlers for supporting our men and women in uniform.

Indianapolis Bowling

Friday, January 13, 2012 by Susie Brehob
Cassie & Carly

When my daughter Cassie turned 12 she wanted to have a bowling birthday party at Sport Bowl (which used to be one of the bowling centers in Indianapolis) She and her sister Carly had grown up in the bowling alley because her dad and I were the owners. It wasn't just a bowling party though, it was a slumber party.  We started the party in the evening and the kids bowled and camped out in the playroom.  We all slept in sleeping bags on the concrete floor.  They even bowled in their pajamas!

It was great fun for them to bring their friends bowling as they had the run of the place.  They would bowl, fix their own drinks in the snack bar, play arcades and basically show their friends a good time.  Our offices were upstairs and they would all hang out, do their homework and spend time till we got off work.  Their friends loved going there after school.

We used to go in on holidays when no one was in the bowling center and the kids would run around, slide on the approaches and bowl in the dark.  We even took our collie sometimes. She would try to walk down the lane and all she would do is slip and slide.  Pretty funny to watch!

Cassie started her work career at Sport Bowl by learning to file, stuff envelopes and do payroll.  She later was a lane attendant, counter person and even worked as cleaning crew over-night.  She and her friend Leslie were cleaning one night when the vacuum cleaner caught on fire in the snack bar and we had to call the fire department.

I can't remember what Carly started out doing but she eventually was a supervisor and bartender/waitress.  Carly loved bowling and may have have been running the bowling center had it not been sold.

Both girls bowled in our Saturday Morning Youth League and in the Teen Traveling League.
High School bowling didn't start until Cassie was out of school but Carly bowled for Perry Meridian High School.  She was on the team when they won the Indiana State Championship girls division.

Bowling has always been a part of our lives.  Carly still bowls for fun and Cassie organizes a bowling event for her fellow teachers at Lowell Elementary, and I work at Western Bowl.

Share your stories if you were a bowling alley kid or your kids grew up in a bowling center.
I'd love to hear them.

Until next time...

GO BOWLING!

The Future of Bowlnation

Friday, January 13, 2012 by Sierra Austill

Do you enjoy the sport of bowling? How about having lunch at your favorite restaurant? Do you want to see those small businesses thrive and those large companies succeed? In order for these things to happen we have to prepare our youth. Indianapolis bowling centers have many coaches that assist our youth bowlers every year to succeed in improving their skills. Although, our coaches are a big help they are dwindling down. Many people love the sport but not many are willing to teach at an Indianapolis bowling center. Our coaches not only teach our youth to better their skills but they also learn many other skills. They are taught how to listen attentively. In order to properly give a bowling lesson the teacher must have the youth bowlers attention. Also, in order for the youth bowler to learn they must give their undevided attention to the coach. Our Indianapolis bowling coaches also teach teamwork. All of our your bowling leagues are created that in order to win you have to have your teams involvement. Involvement is the encouragement they give to each other, the "pick me ups" if something just doesn't go right, and some youth bowlers learn the skills to coach their friends. Royal Pin centers in Indianapolis have many coaches that teach great sportsmanship. Everytime that child bowls in a youth bowling league, they will be bowling against another team. These youth are taught, no matter if you win or lose, that you can cheer on the other team for a job well done.
The sky's the limitThe sky is the limit if we can teach our youth bowling leagues these simple skills. They won't realize they're learning either cuz they'll be having fun. SNA

The SPORT of Bowling

Monday, November 21, 2011 by Sierra Austill

There are a lot of people that do not consider bowling a sport. Bowling allows for interaction between multiple people. That in essence creates good or bad sportsmanship. That also can allow for great friendships and bonds to be created. Bowling will also allow for relationships between families to increase with Southern Indianapolis Bowling Centers Adult/Junior Leagues. Bowling also gives bowlers exercise. It is always suggested to start off bowling by warming up and stretching. There is always the possibility of hurting your back, arm, or legs. I always stretch before bowling. It is good for your body if you stretch, even without bowling, it will keep your muscles from tightening up. You also will be doing a lot of walking. You will want to talk to friends in other lanes, walking back and forth on the approach to throw and retrieve your ball. Also, flexing your muscles while swinging, turning and twisting can help you burn 170-300 calories depending on your weight. I love the sport of bowling. I created a lot of friendships through bowling. I enjoy staying fit and bowling helps me exercise without realizing it. I also can stay on a regular schedule and it's not a hard one to keep. The best way to make sure you continue this exercise is to join a Southern Indianapolis Bowling League. Bowling will always be considered a sport if you're participating in it for fun or joining an Indianapolis bowling league. There is a bowling center in every city. If you don't think you would qualify to bowl, contact your local bowling center and I guarantee they won't tell you that you don't have the ability. Bowling is definitely the sport for YOU. GET OUT THERE AND BOWL! START EXERCISING IN A FUN WAY!

Moving From One Place To Another

Friday, November 11, 2011 by Sierra Austill

Have you ever had to move? Moving from your home to one that has a totally different scenery, different people, and different way of handling things can be an exciting and scary situation. I recently moved from Western Bowling Center to Southern Bowling Center. This experience has given me a different perspective of many different things. I was at Western Bowl for a total of 6 years and I never imagined having to change centers. At first I was very nervous about everything. I was unsure how the other employees would treat me, how many adjustments I would have to make to accommodate the new position I was given. I was very afraid that if I messed up on anything or didn't understand something I would be looked down upon. Southern has given me opportunity to meet new people and experience a different management staff. Although Southern is on the outskirts of Indianapolis in a quiet area, the people inside are full of life and as fun as can be. They welcomed me in as if I had been working there for years. The center itself is well kept and everyone is willing to help you through any difficult situation. I immediately had to start working with our youth bowling leagues. I discovered that the center is extremely involved with the kids and want to make sure they are enjoying themselves. Every month we celebrate the kids' birthdays by getting brownies, cookies, or another type of snack. We have bowling lessons that are included in the youth league. Another great aspect of the center is our kids bowling parties. Our birthday party host will always be recognized by the silly hat that they choose to wear while assisting with your party. They have wonderful personalities and will help the party with anything that they have the ability to. Our birthday party hosts are going to take any and all stress off of you. Having your birthday party at Southern Bowling Center will make things so much easier and it is a sport that anyone can participate in. I remember the first night I was here I went and introduced myself to the bowling leagues. All of the bowlers were very nice and greeted me with such enthusiasm. Working some nights more than others I have already remembered some of their names. Remembering the names of the bowlers is the greatest thing ever. You're able to personally greet them and having approximately 200 bowlers in the center it can be a very difficult task. When you talk to the bowlers by name or remember a score they bowled, the bowlers realize how much you truly care about them. Working in an Indianapolis Bowling Center has also given me respect for the people that are behind the scenes. Have you ever thought about how the machines are not breaking down or why there are clean restrooms to use? The next time that you go to the Southern Bowling Center, think about all the things that are done to make your experience a great one. Once you learn all the different angles of bowling, you will love Indianapolis bowling as much as I do.

Bowling in Indianapolis

Friday, October 28, 2011 by Susie Brehob

Last week Indianapolis was host to the Indiana State Bowing Proprietor's board meeting and seminars. One of the seminar speakers talked about how bowling has changed over the years.  For example, there are less league bowlers but more people are enjoying open play with their families and friends.  We now offer cosmic bowling, bumper bowling, fun tournaments, kid's birthday parties, live music and other events no one thought of 20 years ago.

Something that hasn't changed is that bowling centers are one of the few places where people still gather weekly (and sometimes even daily).  We have several bowlers who participate in all 3 of our senior socials and also bowl in one or more bowling leagues.
The bowling center is a place where people not only bowl but make lifelong friendships.

Some people even meet their future spouses. Western Bowl is hosting a wedding reception this November for a couple who met while bowling. They wanted to do something really fun and different to celebrate their union and chose Western Bowl.  The reception will include all the normal activities; a meal, cutting of the cake and of course bowling.  We can't wait to see if the bride bowls in her wedding gown!

If you haven't checked out what bowling has to offer lately, want to make new friends or even have your special event here, come check us out.

It's getting chilly outside

Friday, September 16, 2011 by Kristi King
Wow I can really tell the seasons are changing. I woke up this morning and went outside and it felt like a perfect autumn morning. I love this weather. Fall is proably my favorite season of all. The air is cool without being too cold and it never gets too hot.

I also love the changing of the color of the leaves. I remeber when I was a kid, mom and dad would take us down to Brown County state park this time of year. We would go on hikes and look at all the different colors and be amazed by the beauty in the trees.

But I also remember how this time of year makes me want to head indoors. I really enjoy indoor activities.  I know that of all the activities to choose from bowling is the most fun, including a bowling birthday party!

People must be thinking about what fun indoor activities they can do as it starts to cool outside. I have been taking reservations for corporate outings all day. The phone just wont stop ringing. I'm starting to get the idea that bowling events in Indianapolis are being booked by bussiness all over the city.

I can also tell that the changing weather is making parents think were they can hold their children birthday parties Indianapolis. We have been taking reservations all week for children bowling parties and extreme laser tag. I hope that we can continue this all season long.

But also as its starts to cool outside it makes me think about what I can do inside with my friends and family. I know that we have many bowling leagues Indianapolis but the one's currently being offered at Royal Pin have some pretty cool options. I have looked into bowling in the pizza & beer, college merchandise league and 8 for 8 leagues.

I know that as far as youth bowling leagues Indianapolis go Royal Pin offers a pretty fantastic program. My brother recently enrolled my neice in the program. She is having a blast bowling with children her own age and the atmosphere here at Expo on Saturday morings is awesome!

The Language of the Lanes

Friday, September 9, 2011 by Terri Powell
Now that I have been in my new office for close to a month I was cleaning out a few files left from who knows when and I found a list of interesting bowling terms.  I have been hanging out at Bowling Alleys in Indianapolis for more years than I care to count and thought I knew all the bowling lingo.  Well let me tell you, I do not!

If you go to any Indiana bowling centers on league night you are bound to hear the language of the lanes.  I'm sure that most Bowling Alleys in Indianapolis all sound the same on league night. We all talk the language of the lanes.

Looking over this list of bowling lingo (33 definitions in fact) there were only 11 I knew. I made the decision to call on a few folks that had been in the bowling leagues Indianapolis a little longer than me and see if they knew them.  I did not set anyone up to fail, I told them the list I was reading, were bowling terms.

Barb Short, Manager at Expo Bowling Center, http://royalpin.com/ExpoBowl/expo.htm thank goodness had not heard of many more than I.  For example: she had heard of the Christmas Tree (leaving the 3-7-10 combination for righthander or the 2-7-10 combination for a lefthander; these are also called "faith, hope and charity") but was not able to come up with it's definition.

Monica Meals, Program Director at Woodland Bowling Center Indianapolis  http://royalpin.com/WoodlandBowl/woodland.htm had no idea what I was talking about when I asked her about "poison ivy" (the troublesome 3-7-10 split) also known as the "Christmas Tree". Her response was "that stuff you get from the yard".  Let me tell you, she is one sharp cookie and if she didn't know this, we could be looking at some real old school terms, after all she is a spring chicken. She knew about the same number as I.

In my quest to find others who had heard of these words, I have only found one and he started throwing words from the list at me and he hadn't even looked at it.  My guess is these are old school. Let's make this interesting and see how many of you are familiar with some of these and maybe even have some to share. When you are bowling leagues in Indianapolis do you use bowling lingo and have you heard of any of these? I would love to heard what you think each of these mean.

1. Mother-In-Law  2. Blowout  3. Grasshopper  4. Throwing Rocks  5. Umbrella Ball

I will post the definitions for these 5 tomorrow

Blogging

Tuesday, August 30, 2011 by Terri Powell

We are supposed to blog once a week here at Royal Pin, but I often find it hard to think of a topic for discussion. There are only so many times you can talk about kids bowling parties, laser tag parties and bowling parties. I keep looking for new avenues to write about, but I am coming up empty.

I thought self..  you could write about each center...  but, what to say about Western Bowl Indianapolis, Woodland bowling center Indianapolis, Expo bowling center or Southern bowling center, that you do not already know.  I could say how Western has a great staff and mention a few of their names.  Mark, Susie and Doug.  How many of you know them?  Did you know that they would love for you to stop by their office and just say hello? Does anyone out there have a funny story to tell about Western?

I am curious about how many times per week you bowl, how many have shot 300 and how many have not broken 100. Do you have a favorite memory of bowling with family? Those are things I think about.

I can remember going to watch my Mother bowl in league. As a kid that was so BORING.   Wow..I wish I could see her bowl again.  I remember she looked kinda funny going to the foul line (she had the HOP in her approach).  She was not a great bowler but her team had such a good time. I remembering them laughing, come to think of it they might have been laughing at her approach.  It wasn't until I became an adult that I realized what team building Indianapolis was all about and how bowling memories carry on forever. Share your memories with us.  We would love to hear them!

Sometimes I just enjoy watching the bowlers. Everyone  has their own style and it doesn't seem to matter if the delivery is text book. Big scores can be shot by just be consistent.  Often times bowlers to schedule a bowling lesson with Ray and I am so happy to see their average jump up. Isn't it crazy how picking up a ten pin can make you so excited! What's the most difficult spare for you? I know I could use a bowling lesson on the ten pin. Maybe I should schedule a bowling lesson with Ray..  Hmmm...  something to think about.

Enjoy your week!

Tis the Season

Friday, August 12, 2011 by Terri Powell
Well the time has come for everyone to think about what they will be doing this fall.  All the Royal Pin Leisure Centers have put together great programs for the upcoming season. It's safe to say that bowling leagues Indianapolis are the best of the best.

I know that there are a few teams that need help finding bowlers to finish off their line up.  Let your center know what you need to finish up your team. If you need a team they can also help. You could go to face book and post your needs on the Royal Pin Fan Page. With so many bowlers in the city Indianapolis team building could be easy if we use the tools available to us. Don't forget that if your game needs some work all the centers will be scheduling learn to bowl classes.

I haven't bowled in about 3 years and have decided this might be year to get back to it. I really miss the 2 hours of visiting with friends.  I am amazed at the number of people I don't see anymore, you always think you run into them after bowling. That doesn't always seem to pan out.

I would not know three of my best friends without bowling.  I met 1 of them in 1990 and the others in 1992, or is that 91... oh I'm not sure of the year now but it's been a really long time. It is crazy how bowling leagues produce family members you didn't know you had. :-)  Okay so they are family by choice. But sometimes that is the best kind. When I talk to people who want to bowl in a league to meet others, I always tell them, bowlers are the best kind of friends. They are loyal, kind, generous and end up friends for a lifetime.

So come on in and pick your new family of choice!  Bowling leagues Indianapolis is a great place to start!

Bowlers attended the Brickyard 400 together!

Monday, August 8, 2011 by Stacey Davis

Hey NASCAR fans! Did you make it out to the Brickyard 400 this year?

I kept hearing how low attendance was going to be, but did you know it drew in an estimated crowd of 180,000. I’d say that’s quite a few people. Its bigger than most other events in Indianapolis that I’ve attended. I still think fans are loyal and they will do what they can to get out and support their favorite driver – even in near 100 degree weather! Royal Pin bowlers are no different!

Yeah, it was hot. I got a pretty good burn on my shoulders and nose, and had to drink 2 waters to every beer just to stay hydrated, but I enjoyed the race! Opening ceremonies are always exciting – America the Beautiful (Reba McEntire) and the National Anthem (Rascal Flats), followed by the jets flying over always get me pumped up for whatever event I’m attending.

I didn’t attend this event alone. Royal Pin locations Southern Bowl and Western Bowl both had NASCAR bowling leagues. In these leagues bowlers enjoyed 15 weeks of light competition and meeting new people with similar interests. The leagues ended last week and all teams from both bowling centers received tickets to the Brickyard 400.

So Kristi King from Southern Bowl, Doug Hall from Western Bowl, the grill master of Royal Pin Leisure Centers, Jim Doty, several bowlers and I had a tailgate party and walked in to the race together. The tailgate party was a perk of the bowling league. In addition to the race tickets bowlers got parking passes, vouchers for Brickyard souvenirs, free food, sodas, water, and yes, even beer.

Paul Menard’s victory over Jeff Gordon (also a bowling fan) was a bit of a surprise for most. But you don’t have to be a champion bowler to win tickets to next year’s race, just join the Royal Pin’s NASCAR bowling league next year and you’re in. If you’re a real fanatic about NASCAR look for our merchandise bowl league where you can get bowling balls or bowling pins with photos and designs of your favorite driver.

Thanks to all of you for joining the league! You’re welcome to add comments to this post, or upload photos to this or our Facebook Fan page. We enjoy getting to know you outside of they Royal Pin walls as well!

Bowling League to Support Indianapolis Colts

Thursday, August 4, 2011 by Stacey Davis

Great so the NFL lockout is over! No more wondering when/if the football season is going to start. For many local businesses there is not more concern whether or not Indianapolis will host the Super Bowl this year. This will be the biggest events in Indianapolis!

From my understanding of it all it is final. Players are in training. Austin Collie is healthy. Peyton Manning is a Colt for life. Colts fans have every reason to be excited for the fall.

Many of us at Royal Pin are also true Indianapolis Colts fans. We have put together a fun, casual league for you. We have a short season bowling league starting in September in which all bowlers get a ticket to three Colts home games. If you're bowling in Indianapolis might as well attend a few Indianapolis Colts games, right?

Come in each week, bowl with friends and attend a few games this season. The three games are against Jacksonville (11/3), Caroline (11/27) and Tennessee (12/8).

Last year we had over 100 bowlers in this league.

But wait! We have something for you season ticket holders to! Bowl in our Pro Team league and get an authentic, high quality jersey of the player and team of your choice.

To get more information or join either of these bowling leagues contact your closest Royal Pin bowling center. We’ll be happy to get you on the right league and supporting your favorite sport and team!

Help Break the World Record for Most games bowled

Tuesday, August 2, 2011 by Stacey Davis

I remember early in junior high and even elementary school when the Guinness Book of World Records was so fascinating to me. I can still remember the pictures of the tallest man and shortest lady, big growths on people’s bodies and all types of human oddities. I also remember the fun things like the biggest ball of rubber bands or longest number of people holding hands. Classmates and I entertained the idea that we could make the longest chain of paper clips until we realized it was only one box and they belonged to the teacher.

Well, now we all have our chance at breaking a world record together!

Royal Pin Leisure Centers is joining more than 4,000 bowling cen
ters nationwide inviting the public to attempt to break the current record of 923,948 bowling games played in a single day.

On August 6, Royal Pin is inviting the public to bowl their first game for free in this national project. All those who take part in the World Record breaking event will receive a certificate to verify their participation.

The 2011 National Bowling Week kicked off July 30 witnational bowling week free gameh the record-breaking attempt to occur on National Bowling Day, August 6. To launch the weeklong celebration, bowling centers across the United States will host special events that will include coaching clinics, bowling parties, quick and easy league sign-up and plenty of fun.On Saturday, anyone who downloads the free game coupon on our front page (www.royalpin.com) can bowl one game for free and take part in the World Record breaking event. For your efforts, you will also receive a certificate to verify your participation.

In Indianapolis and across the United States, this sport has seen an incredible resurgence in popularity. We are proud to celebrate a great year for bowling and to thank all of the people who have supported Royal Pin. We are excited to join thousands of centers, from coast-to-coast across the United States, in attempting to set a new world record.  We invite people of all levels and talents to stop by and play for free as we try to help make history!

We may not get our names or crazy, memorable photos in a book of records, but it would be a fun little fact you can share with your friends. Actually bring all your friends and family along. In this case the more really is the merrier!

The World Record Event and National Bowling Week are sponsored by the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA), Strike Ten Entertainment (STE), the International Bowling Pro Shop and Instructors Association (IBPSIA), the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) and the United States Bowling Congress (USBC).

Bowling Tips

Thursday, March 10, 2011 by Customer Reviews
Hi Dave Thanks for sending the pfd on spare shooting. On my first league night after the Bowling lesson, I had a 519 series [178,159.182] with a 121 average. Needless to say a big improvement. Last night I shot 154,102 and 163 on a 125 average, and my teammate and I had entered the doubles pool and won on the third game. So my bowling lesson is paying off, literally. It is much more fun and interesting bowling after the bowling lessons.
Thanks, I'll be in touch and will recommend you for lessons as the best place for bowling lesson in Indianapolis.

Bowling in the Western Indianapolis Area

Tuesday, January 25, 2011 by Susie Brehob
Greetings from Western Bowling Center located on the west side of Indianapolis!

Bowling at Western Bowl has been booming so far this January.  Our Saturday morning Bowlopolis Youth League started back on January 8th with several new bowlers.  We'd like to welcome them to our bowling league and to our center.  We met with the new parents, served them coffee and donuts and went over all that we have to offer their kids.  Most of the parents didn't realize that we give scholarships, offer free learn to bowl classes, participate in bowling tournaments and offer a discount card to all our league bowlers.

Western Bowl was the host center for the Qubica Family Bowling Tournament this past Saturday.  65 teams competed in 4 different divisions with entries from 5 local area bowling centers.  17 teams will be advancing to the State Finals with the chance to bowl in the National Finals this summer.  Good Luck to all the bowling teams!

League bowling has changed over the years and it's not just for the competitive bowler any more. We're offering all kinds of league packaging so that everyone can enjoy our sport.  So far this January we've started a Pizza and Beer League, an Adult/Youth league where the bowlers can receive a bowling ball or bowling pin of their choice at the end of the season.
Combining with one of the premier events in Indianapolis, we're starting an Indy 500 bowling league. This league will bowling weekly beginning February 13th and end right before the race.  Each bowler in the league will go to the 500 race with a tailgate party prior to the start, a Trac Scan rental discount and a $5.00 gift card for retail shopping.

Kids parties in Indianapolis are a big part of our weekends here at Western Bowl.
Parents are happy to turn the party over to us so they can just enjoy their child's birthday.
Debbie S said "Heather was wonderful with our kids."
Alyssa B said "Great time...we'll be back"

Be sure to check out our website at www.royalpin.com, email me at sbrehob@royalpin.com or call 317-247-4426 to find out about all the happenings here at Western Bowl.
