The Future of Bowlnation

Friday, January 13, 2012 by Sierra Austill

Do you enjoy the sport of bowling? How about having lunch at your favorite restaurant? Do you want to see those small businesses thrive and those large companies succeed? In order for these things to happen we have to prepare our youth. Indianapolis bowling centers have many coaches that assist our youth bowlers every year to succeed in improving their skills. Although, our coaches are a big help they are dwindling down. Many people love the sport but not many are willing to teach at an Indianapolis bowling center. Our coaches not only teach our youth to better their skills but they also learn many other skills. They are taught how to listen attentively. In order to properly give a bowling lesson the teacher must have the youth bowlers attention. Also, in order for the youth bowler to learn they must give their undevided attention to the coach. Our Indianapolis bowling coaches also teach teamwork. All of our your bowling leagues are created that in order to win you have to have your teams involvement. Involvement is the encouragement they give to each other, the "pick me ups" if something just doesn't go right, and some youth bowlers learn the skills to coach their friends. Royal Pin centers in Indianapolis have many coaches that teach great sportsmanship. Everytime that child bowls in a youth bowling league, they will be bowling against another team. These youth are taught, no matter if you win or lose, that you can cheer on the other team for a job well done.
The sky's the limitThe sky is the limit if we can teach our youth bowling leagues these simple skills. They won't realize they're learning either cuz they'll be having fun. SNA

Bowling in Indianapolis

Tuesday, January 10, 2012 by Susie Brehob

Greetings from Western Bowl in Indianapolis!

On my last blog I told you about the wedding reception that was held at Western Bowl last November (11/11/11!)

We received a nice thank you note which read;

"Western Bowl Staff,
Thank you so much for the card and bowling gift cards.  You really helped to make our day special!  Thanks, Shannon & Paul"

We want to wish Shannon & Paul the best of luck!

We've held all kinds of other special events at the bowling center over the past years.  The most recent ones have been a baby shower (no the mom to be didn't bowl), kids birthday parties, cosmic bowling events, corporate outings which are great for team building, bowling with Santa and the Easter Bunny and our Halloween Bowling Bash to name just a few.

We've also held collegiate bowling tournaments, monthly 9 Pin No Tap tournaments and monthly Texas Hold 'em Tournaments.

There are lots of special events in Indianapolis this coming month with the Super Bowl but if you're looking for something else to do book your special event with us at Western Bowl.

Until next time, happy bowling!

SNOW IS HERE

Wednesday, December 28, 2011 by Terri Powell
Oh finally the snow arrives and it seems to change the tone of everything. I only wish it had snowed like this on Christmas. Have you ever noticed when you are outside how quiet it becomes. It brings a peacefulness. But I know only too well how busy the bowling alleys in Indianapolis are when the snow begins to fly. The kids are out of school and the planning for the New Years' Eve event are enough to make you go crazy.  You can ask anyone of the staff and they will tell you this is a great time of year but NUTS.

I called around to our bowling centers today,  to see how everyone was doing with their big parties coming up. Southern bowling center has only 3 lanes left and everyone else has several openings.

They will be blowing up balloons, getting party favors together, buying those crazy door prizes and preparing the food. It takes every employee to pull those parties off. Team building Indianapolis is at it's highest when it comes to NYE at the bowling centers. There is a sense of pride when you look at your evening and know that approximately 1000 people celebrated the New Year with you.

Team Building at its Silliest!

Wednesday, October 12, 2011 by Stacey Davis
Arlington/Roe is home based in Indianapolis and each of our locations, Grand Rapids, MI – Geneva, IL & Louisville, KY organize a Spring and Fall outing designed to:
#1 Have Fun
#2 Get to Know the many people with whom we work

AR team 2In Indianapolis we have 90 plus employees so we thought team building “with a theme” would be fun. The bowling teams are made up of people from various departments and a general theme is established. Based on the theme the teams compete not only for bowling scores but a competition is organized for best name and best “costumes”.  Yes, our people go over the top being creative and competitive.  Themes have included Decades – Where each team had a different decade 50’s 60’s 70’s and so on. Our hat theme was a hoot and this year’s sock theme was more fun than expected when the Loose Socks won for their shirts with odd socks stuck to them and one guy wearing a washing machine made from a box and another cut a hole in the laundry basket and wore it at his waist.  Hilarious…and quite clever.

The people at Woodland Bowling Center treat us like gold and for
AR team 4 some reason they give us a private area as far away from their patrons as possible.  GRIN… We always get comments about how much fun we appear to be having and we are loud.  This year we were presented with our own bowling pin complete with our logo and a thank you to our company.  We appreciated it and it’s proudly displayed in our reception area.

The person who is the most fun in our group is the owner of the
company Jim Roe who loves to put his wallet right by the lane offering it to you if  you make a strike…”under the pressure”…. He’s been lucky and hasn’t had to pay out yet, but some day he’ll pick the wrong person to bet against. Jim believes good business is based on good relationships and “The Golden Rule”.  He is intently dedicated to giving us the tools we need to be successful. We only need to work hard and work smart....and as you might guess, have fun.

It’s a wonderful time and each year we propose other team building ideas but bowling at Woodland Bowling Center always wins. It should be noted that not all our people bowl, so we organize card games but many just love to be spectators and cheerleaders for their team. Everyone is a part of a team and there is money for the winners!
AR team 3
Most importantly we recommend hands down that you organize your next business or personal fun event at Woodland Bowling Center. We’ll be happy to share with you how we organize ours. Woodland knows how to reach us.

Arlington/Roe is a Managing General Agency and Wholesale Insurance Broker. We were established in 1964 and are excited to be coming up on 50 years of service.  Our customers are the many independent insurance agents that serve the high risk needs of the insurance buying public. If you would like to learn more about us feel free to visit www.arlingtonroe.com.

To the teams of Arlington/Roe,

Thank you for having your event at Woodland Bowling Center every year. We do our best to host team building events in Indianapolis. Arlington/Roe has the idea down right. These people were dressed in the silliest costumes and all having a great time! I walked in and noticed the socks right away. How I noticed that over the tall guy in the pink leotard and big wig is beyond me!

We appreciate your business and your great attitude. See you again next year!

Growing up in a Bowling Center.

Friday, September 16, 2011 by Sierra Austill
I am not going to spend this blog telling you why you should Sign-up for a Bowling League....even though u should. Instead I am going to tell you how a bowling center has made an impact on the person I am today. I know you are saying "ya right", but give me a chance to tell you a story.. I started working at a bowling center in 1998 at the young age of 15. I was the girl that brought you a drink or cheeseburger to your lane. Back then we even had  coffee and pizza carts. I was a shy kid that wasn't really trusting of people. I would never be the first to talk to anyone. I really didn't know or care much about the game of bowling honestly, I just wanted the independence of buying things for myself.  Don't think that overnight I turned into the "talk to anyone who is listening" person that I am today...no way. After awhile people started calling me by name.I don't care who you are that makes you feel important enough to be remembered. I began to find it easier to start conversations. In two days I will have came to my 13th year at Royal Pin. I cant even begin to tell you how may people I have met and became good friends with. I always joke how I have to much of a "heart" of a bowler. I don't even really bowl that much anymore.  it is just that I feel that I owe it to make their night out as best as it can be. I honestly am a people person now and looking back the only thing that has help me come out of my shell..are the bowlers and I am forever in debt to them. When I ask them how they are doing, their kids, their game...I honestly care. I sure there are some  critics out there that are "yeah ok thats your job" but it is more than that to me. I have literally grown-up in a bowling alley, and not meaning because I have been working there so long, but because I have learned so much about life through bowlers. I believe that I wouldn't  be anything close to who I am now if I had not the experience of meeting and growing  with people year after year. I hope that I have made just a smidge of the impact that people in a center has made on me. It really becomes your home. I have recently been transfered to another center and its hard. I think I depended on the interaction with "my bowlers" more than they realize. It gets a little easier day by day, but the first two weeks I honestly cried when I passed. I know that nothing last forever and sometimes things come to an end. But I hope that people know that a bowling center to me is more than just a place of business. It is a place where true friendships and bonds really do happen. So here to you my fellow bowlers ...thank you. Thank you for helping learn that there are great people out there that they just so happen love to bowl. I know people kid about me being a lifer, but that's ok because I couldn't tell you another place of employment where such friendships can be formed between customers and employees. So I leave you with a question...Where is your center??? and what makes you keep returning?? Hope I haven't put you to sleep yet:)

It's getting chilly outside

Friday, September 16, 2011 by Kristi King
Wow I can really tell the seasons are changing. I woke up this morning and went outside and it felt like a perfect autumn morning. I love this weather. Fall is proably my favorite season of all. The air is cool without being too cold and it never gets too hot.

I also love the changing of the color of the leaves. I remeber when I was a kid, mom and dad would take us down to Brown County state park this time of year. We would go on hikes and look at all the different colors and be amazed by the beauty in the trees.

But I also remember how this time of year makes me want to head indoors. I really enjoy indoor activities.  I know that of all the activities to choose from bowling is the most fun, including a bowling birthday party!

People must be thinking about what fun indoor activities they can do as it starts to cool outside. I have been taking reservations for corporate outings all day. The phone just wont stop ringing. I'm starting to get the idea that bowling events in Indianapolis are being booked by bussiness all over the city.

I can also tell that the changing weather is making parents think were they can hold their children birthday parties Indianapolis. We have been taking reservations all week for children bowling parties and extreme laser tag. I hope that we can continue this all season long.

But also as its starts to cool outside it makes me think about what I can do inside with my friends and family. I know that we have many bowling leagues Indianapolis but the one's currently being offered at Royal Pin have some pretty cool options. I have looked into bowling in the pizza & beer, college merchandise league and 8 for 8 leagues.

I know that as far as youth bowling leagues Indianapolis go Royal Pin offers a pretty fantastic program. My brother recently enrolled my neice in the program. She is having a blast bowling with children her own age and the atmosphere here at Expo on Saturday morings is awesome!

Bowling League to Support Indianapolis Colts

Thursday, August 4, 2011 by Stacey Davis

Great so the NFL lockout is over! No more wondering when/if the football season is going to start. For many local businesses there is not more concern whether or not Indianapolis will host the Super Bowl this year. This will be the biggest events in Indianapolis!

From my understanding of it all it is final. Players are in training. Austin Collie is healthy. Peyton Manning is a Colt for life. Colts fans have every reason to be excited for the fall.

Many of us at Royal Pin are also true Indianapolis Colts fans. We have put together a fun, casual league for you. We have a short season bowling league starting in September in which all bowlers get a ticket to three Colts home games. If you're bowling in Indianapolis might as well attend a few Indianapolis Colts games, right?

Come in each week, bowl with friends and attend a few games this season. The three games are against Jacksonville (11/3), Caroline (11/27) and Tennessee (12/8).

Last year we had over 100 bowlers in this league.

But wait! We have something for you season ticket holders to! Bowl in our Pro Team league and get an authentic, high quality jersey of the player and team of your choice.

To get more information or join either of these bowling leagues contact your closest Royal Pin bowling center. We’ll be happy to get you on the right league and supporting your favorite sport and team!

Mini Golf

Thursday, June 2, 2011 by Terri Powell
The breeze is cool tonight and it's perfect for playing Pirates Cove Miniature Golf. I was outside earlier taking some pictures and surprised to see several families playing mini golf. My first thought was it might be too hot.  I was wrong! With the great breeze we seem to have out there all the time and the mist coming off the fountains it really is quite nice.

I felt the urge to say "argg" in my best pirate voice but the kids did not see any humor in this.  I tired the "shiver me timbers" again with no luck.  I thought I heard one of them say "I should walk the plank" That left me wishing i could play too. Maybe another day!

I walked around Pirates Cove, hoping to catch a glimpse of Johnny Depp.  No luck..  I could only dream.  I soon came back to reality and remembered the corporate outings and pictures I needed to take.  I enjoyed walking around Pirate's Cove Miniature Golf today, it's like stepping into another world.  Next time I'll take my pirate hat and maybe the kids will see the humor in my "argg".

If you see me out there working my pirate act, give me a break and for a few minutes play along. After all there is no better place for mini golf Indianapolis than Pirate's Cove.

Indianapolis Team Building

Tuesday, May 17, 2011 by Terri Powell
Today like many other days at Woodland Bowl Indianapolis we are booking corporate outings like crazy. Janice is really selling the team building Indianapolis!  Keep up the good work.

We have a great party coming up next week with a facilitator and our staff always looks forward to hosting. That is our chance to get out there and meet the bowlers and interact.

I personally enjoy the team challenge part of the event. That is where is team creates a cheer to perform in front of their colleagues. I have seen some real wild ideas but it does bring a new meaning to Indianapolis Team Building. The participants growl when they first hear the instructions but as their performance draws near they are rehearsing and asking for paper to write a script.  Many sing songs, do dances and some bring back those high school cheer-leading days.  No matter what the initial response to this challenge it always ends with everyone laughing.

Team Building Indianapolis has never been better.

Thank you to all of those who have participated.

Free bowling lessons

Thursday, March 3, 2011 by Customer Reviews
Hi Dave. I don't know if you remember me, but you gave me a free lesson at Southern Bowl about a month ago. My lady friend and I are both 68, and we didn't really think a lesson would be of much help.
You had me change to a 4-step delivery and showed me how to hold the ball to get more action on it. You also showed me where to stand to convert more spares. Since then I've practiced what you taught me, and it has really helped my scores. The Thursday before last I had a 298 game and a 667 series. Last Thursday I had a 236 game and 607 series. Today I had games of 240, 257 and 203. All of these scores were in league bowling. I've been bowling so much better that everybody has been asking me who gave me my lesson and I've given them your name. They got some of your business cards and should be calling you. With your help I've become a better bowler and a good advertisement for how much your lessons can help anyone. Thanks again for all the help.

Christmas Parties

Tuesday, December 14, 2010 by Terri Powell
Corporate Outings went great this last week. Area companies are visiting Woodland Bowling Center Indianapolis to celebrate the holidays! Our schedule was crazy but exciting all at the same time. We really enjoy when Indianapolis team building is so successful.
This week brings us lots of excitement, everyday we are hosting more corporate outings.

Last weekend brought us 13 bowling birthday party families on Saturday. I was out working with the kids bowling parties and now more than every appreciate our hosts.  The concourse looked like birthday party central and to my surprise several of these parties had 20+ children.  I am thankful that a bowling birthday party is popular.

We are getting ready for this coming weekend with several different activities. We have bowl with Santa on Saturday, kids bowling parties and the Youth bowling league Indianapolis banquet. Sunday brings us the 9 Pin No Tap tournament.  I am sorry to say that John has retired and will no longer be running these tournaments, but we are going to continue. The program office is looking forward at next year's schedule and planning dates for these tournaments. Our hope is to grow from John's great ground work and turn this into the best Indianapolis bowling tournament.

New Party Hosts

Friday, October 1, 2010 by Terri Powell
Fall has arrived and the cooler weather is driving kids bowling parties inside where it's warm. We have hired several new bowling birthday party hosts anticipating a very busy season.

I am excited to see the  new faces and thankful to see the experienced hosts still on staff. The training process has begun with some kids bowling parties having 2 or 3 hosts attending to them. I will be glad when training is over and everyone is comfortable. The new hosts will have to wait to receive their Pirates Cove Miniature Golf training. As I do not think many will be booking when the snow begins to fly.

Woodland Bowling Center Indianapolis is proud to announce their new kids bowling parties host:   Welcome to Ryan, Jasmine, Sheree and Monique.  We are glad to have you on our team.

This past week we worked on some team building and I thought it was successful. We are going to have a bowling birthday party host of the month. If your host has done an outstanding job for you please let us know by turning in your comment card. The host with the most comments cards turned in and of course with the best comments will be the "Bowling Birthday Party Host of the month". We are working on what their prize will be and as soon as a decision is made we will make it known.

I want to say a great BIG thank you to all the hosts new and old. If they were not doing a great job we would not have all the kids bowling parties that we do.

Here are a few examples of comment cards turned in:

Kristina-Mallory & Morgan did a great job!  The kids had a wonderful time at the bowling birthday party, and it was made easy on the parents.

Erik-Morgan was great!  She got ice for a hurt finger for the birthday boy and soothed some tears for us.  He had a great time at his bowling birthday party!  Thanks!

Daua-Riley was awsome!! very tentive and went over and beyond expectations.  Riley really helped make my kids bowling party a lot of fun!

Bowling Alley vs Bowling Center

Friday, September 3, 2010 by Terri Powell
Woodland Bowling Center Indianapolis, back in the day was a place where our parents went out to the bowling "alley". It was smoke filled and the beer flowed. Now it is not smoke filled but you can still have that beer. There are no worries about score keeping, only worry is what activity to do first. The bowling "alleys" are now a more family oriented place.  Woodland Bowling Center Indianapolis has become a place to relax, enjoy music, play billiards and enjoy the bowling atmosphere. There are so many possibilities from playing arcade games, food, leagues or recreational bowling. It is hard to imagine Woodland Bowling Center Indianapolis ever being a bowling "alley". Recently while watching a Mom with her children, I realized how different things are. I would so enjoy being that kid again. No more would I have to hang out behind Mom and Dad's lane. I would be able to play for hours in the Big Top and go outside and play Pirate's Cove Miniature Golf.  I thought how lucky I am to work in an industry that promotes not only corporate outings but also family time. Thank you to all the families that schedule their kids bowling birthday parties and help change the bowling "alley" into a bowling center.

Kids with time on their hands

Thursday, July 29, 2010 by Terri Powell

When parents cannot find affordable entertainment for their children, it leaves them with the question "now what?".

I have worried about my children having too much time on their hands. It occurred to me that I should purchase gift cards that I could reload for local activities. My first thought of course was bowling. After all I am a bowler who works in the business too. Then it hit me, why not bowling? A few kids bowling a couple of games sure would use up time.  That would mean less time for them to drive around just looking for trouble.  Well, maybe not looking but falling into.  I looked at the price of movies.. WOW..  I could not afford to send my son and a couple of his friends to the show at $10.00 per person.  So back to the bowling idea I went.  I could purchase a gift card, they could use that to play Pirates Cove Miniature Golf, Extreme Laser Tag or go bowling at Woodland Bowling Center Indianapolis.

So...  it became my treat for him and a couple of his friends to enjoy.  Helping to solve the problem of too much time and the dreaded words "I'm bored".
